Photography and Vinyl Portraits

My name is Johan Pabon. I’m a Dutch filmer and photographer. I mainly work in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. I was born in 1958, so I’m part of the baby boomer generation.

Being a teenager in the seventies television, radio, lp’s and cassettes were very important media. I think the LP stood out because radio and televison also belonged to the older generations. Cassette and tape recorders were mainly there to record LPs.
Working on the Vinyl Portraits series is important because it tells the story about our generation through the LPs.

It is nice to recognize those stories of fellow baby boomers. They contain all kinds of recognizable details such as the ticking of the needle, going out, youth centers and concerts. Besides similarities and differences in taste, there is recognition  in the way we treated our records, the way we discovered new artists or the ways we used to record them on tape.
At my studio or on location I like to portray every person against a black background. The only difference I like to see is the person and his particular own choice of a record.
